About this work

Saving Singapore's Hawker Heritage is a plan initiated by Uncle James in 2026 and offered as a starting point concrete enough to argue with. For now he works on it alone. He hopes to grow a team of people who care about hawker culture, and every page says how to join in. It is written to be read twice: once by the people who decide, and once by the people who eat.

It is published as a small library. First, an Executive Summary of eight pages. Then the Plan, which makes the case and sets out each proposal. Then seven companion volumes, each written to be read on its own: The Record, the Budget Book, Hawkers and Social Protection, Follow the Plate, Succession Economics, Method, Levers and Data and The Technical Paper. Sources (every reference, once) and Your Table (for diners) sit beside them. The download page says which to start with.

James is born and based in Singapore. He dual-trained as an electrical and computer engineer and public policy. He began his career in the Singapore Government as an industry developer, then spent years as an early-stage venture investor and serial tech entrepreneur. He’s currently working in the automotive industry after his last startup was acquired in 2025. He’s always been an avid foodie and writes as Uncle James at siliconwok.com.

Hawker Heritage is a Silicon Wok initiative.

The hawker trade needs sound policy, patient capital and small-business sense, and he has worked in all three. He initiated this project, and hopes to build a team of people who care about hawker culture and want it to last. He writes here in a personal capacity.

Research, drafting and modelling were assisted by AI tools; every figure is sourced or marked as an assumption.
